O quam gloriosum

In the absence of anything more than this, a figure

in a blue shirt crossing a street in sunlight

whom I may wave to in passing, who may

smile and draw no attention by it

I fill the house with Victoria – ‘O quam

gloriosum’ – those delicious cadences. Listen:

this waiting is a silence filled with music,

mere absence is an antiphon, an 0 flowering

into a melisma. ‘“No” is easy, “yes”

more difficult,’ you said, allowing the word

to hang suspended. So will you anticipate release;

the month will end, absence be filled, the sus

pension will resolve. In that hard answer, yes,

do wanting and circumstance most gloriously concord.
